Company Checkup: Weleda

The next brand in the Company Checkup post series is Weleda, another brand that has managed to make a name of themselves in the natural skin care world. Weleda is an old brand, founded in 1921 by Rudolf Steiner and Ita Wegman. Steiner was a polymath of sorts, still famous today for founding (among other things) anthroposophy, Waldorf education and biodynamic agriculture. Weleda still today calls themself a anthroposphic brand, which is

Weleda In Their Own Words

What does natural skin care mean to you?
To us, natural skin care means using only natural ingredients and processing the raw materials as little as possible. Our products have ingredients from nature and in some instances nature identical and naturelike components such as glycerine and silica gel.
  • We use no synthetic ingredients and no mineral oils.
  • Environmental awareness in the production and choice of ingredients is important for us, as well as packaging and transportation etc.
  • Our raw material is mostly organic and biodynamically grown. Sometimes, like with birch leaves, we use certified wild harvesting.
What makes your products natural?

They are only based on natural ingredients, see question above. We are certified according to NaTrue who have high requirements for ingredients and the company. See for more information.

Why do you believe it is important to use natural and organic products?

It is important for many reasons – environment, health and skin. The skin is our largest organ and it breathes as well as it “eats”. We find that in order to have healthy skin, it is vital to only provide the skin ingredients that makes it feel good, such as fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins. When using organically grown plants, we can ensure that there are no pesticides in the products, that the farming is sustainable and that the farmers who grow the crops can do so in healthy conditions. Weleda also feels a social responsibility and therefore we run several fair trade projects.  (for more information, see
Natural ingredients are very effective in the skin’s systems which gives us good results in dermatological testings, because we use naturally active components such as pomegranate seed oil, rosehip oil etc.

To what extent do you take the environmental impact into account e.g. in the production?

To high extent, which is guaranteed by our certification.

Are your products, or any of the ingredients in your products, tested on animals?

Weleda has never performed animal testing, not on finished products and not on separate ingredients, not now and not when it was still allowed. Today, animal testing is prohibited within the EU.

Weleda’s Products: the Checkup

Calendula baby lotion

6.8 OZ (194g) | Price: US$15.50

Water (Aqua), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Alcohol, Glycerin, Glyceryl Oleate, Calendula Officinalis Extract, Sodium Beeswax, Xanthan Gum, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Limonene*, Linalool*, Geraniol*. * from natural essential oils

Comments: This baby lotion mostly contains oils and natural fragrances, but unfortunately it also contains alcohol, which is drying for the skin. Especially in a lotion designed for babies, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Rosemary hair oil

1.7 FL OZ (50ml) | Price: US$16.50

Arachis Hypogaea (Peanut) Oil, Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Arctium Lappa (Burdock Root) Root Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Limonene*, Linalool*, Geraniol*, Coumarin*. * from natural essential oils

Comments: This product contains mostly vegetable oils and vegetable extracts, and is in my opinion fine. Coumarin is a component that can be harmful for the skin in larger quantitites, but as they claim it comes from essential oils I assume it’s a component from the lavender oil and therefore should be good. Synthetic coumarin is actually banned in the EU, from what I understand.

Pomegranate firming serum

1.0 FL OZ (30ml) | Price: US$45.00

Water (Aqua), Alcohol, Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Fruit Juice, Panicum Miliaceum (Millet) Seed Extract, Prunus Spinosa (Blackthorn) Wood Extract, Xanthan Gum, Citric Acid, Fragrance (Parfum)*, Limonene*,Linalool*, Geraniol*, Citral*, Coumarin*.

Comments: This product contains grain alcohol as it’s second ingredient just after water. I would definitely not recommend this product, also the price is pretty steep for such a small bottle mainly consisting of water and alcohol.

A lot of people in the facebook group for no ‘poo are getting more and more sceptical towards Weleda, claiming that they add more and more harmful ingredients the bigger they get. Accoding to them, they also use palm oil in some of their products, which is a big nono, and are extremely bad at answering emails. Like you saw above, I did receive a reply from them, hoever I had to send out a reminder email (one month after the first) before I got a reply.

I have to say I had expected the products to be better than they seem to be from these three random products. As with so many other brands, I can only advice you to take a closer look at the product ingredients before buying. However, it looks like alcohol is the main culprit to look out for in these products.
